have centralized communication but rarely specific assignments
titles! secret handshakes! sub-factions based on interests/goals! secret messages!
ring-of-trust style references -> badges for a member's skills and resources
be a little suspicious to avoid being entirely saccharine?
(the formality of the society may also assist with this)
initiation (demonstrates good conduct to new members and allows observation)

code of conduct:
- follow the spirit of the code, not just the letter
- it is okay to talk to people.
 - introduce yourself.
 - do not bother people who choose not to be involved.
 - educate receptive people.
 - no evangelism. no superiority.
- add things to the world that make people smile.
 - make art. give gifts. blow bubbles.
 - listen.
- take care of ourselves and each other to the extent possible.
 - pay attention to the needs of your body and mind. take them seriously.
 - remember that other people have these needs too. take that into account.
 - treat strangers like people, always.
- take notes
 - record compliments, well-wishes, good decisions, and lessons
 - no "can't" and no "should" in any society-related communication

still missing a core, something to connect people around
but names, signs, and code of conduct are a good start
interaction, play, respect, self-empowerment with personal responsibility
